T.J. began his childhood infatuated with martial arts through cinema. His father was a martial arts enthusiast with experience in Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, and Karate. During high school, T.J. enrolled in Tae Kwon Do lessons with his father at a local training center. Once he began training, he was hooked and a lifelong passion was born.
Since then, T.J. has trained extensively for over 18 years collectively in many systems which include: Krav Maga, Muay Thai, Boxing, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Bujinkan Ninjutsu, Shorin-Ryu Karate, CDT, Rince an Bhata Uisce Beatha (Irish Stick Fighting), and Jeet Kune Do. He has graduated at the top of his class for every self-defense instructor’s course he has attended.
In addition to training, T.J. has worked extensively for years within nightclub security as a bouncer. This has brought with it the hands-on experience of becoming directly involved in or the breaking up of hundreds of street and bar fights. This “real life” training ground has led to a focus on realism in T.J.’s training. Anything that works is used, and anything that doesn’t work is discarded.
Wanting to teach a system that he totally believes in – and that has total efficacy – T.J. took and modified techniques from all of these systems – combined with some techniques of his own creation – and formed a hybrid system that was named the HYBRID FIGHTING METHOD™. T.J. now teaches the Hybrid Fighting Method™ (HFM™) as a complete method of self-defense.
T.J. also spends time teaching self-defense at high schools - giving students the physical skills and mental tools to overcome violence.
T.J. has also served on the event steering committee for the founding office of the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) as Manager of Security & Safety. The WRC is an international organization working toward the goal of ending violence against women.
T.J. is also an expert author on self-defense and violence prevention and can often be found poring over a library of books on evolutionary psychology, the psychology of violence, and violence prevention.
